Chapter Eight

Brendan

I hold back a chuckle as Brigit’s nostrils flare. Her brother stops, turning to me, spitting out the question, “Why is she here?”

“I could ask you the same question,” Brigit steps closer to us., “Why you’ve even started on this foolish journey.”

Flavian’s eyes narrow, his fists clenching., “I don’t answer to you.”

“I’m the only one you should answer to,” Brigit snaps back, “These people,” Her voice is dripping with hatred., “They don’t deserve us.”

Flavian stamps his feet, his hands smoothing back his cape., “And it’s your mouth that keeps ruining my name at court.” His lips twitch. “I’d thank you to keep your poison to yourself.”

Brigit’s lips twitch, a mirror to her brother’s face. The way her fingers curl, she’s going to rant. We don’t have time for them to argue this out. I stand, taking a step towards the loft., “Darcy, you awake?”

Brigit levels a glare at me, obviously annoyed that I interrupted. But the sun has already risen. We need to be on our way.

Darcy’s voice floats down., “Who could sleep through their yelling?”

Behind me, Flavian snorts. I keep my voice steady., “Come on down. We’ll be leaving directly.”

Flavian starts speaking to his sister before I can even finish., “You can’t come.”

“Of course, I can.”

“We’re under orders from the Queen. This is a secret mission. Gods know how you even learned where we were.”

“Secrets,” Brigit tosses her hair, sending me a glare. “What good has ever come from the court keeping secrets?” That’s not an answer to Flavian’s question, one I’ve wondered as well. Brigit may avoid court, but there’s no doubt she has contacts. Someone who tells her too much information.

She won’t let that slip; she’s too careful to give away her leads. Right now, we need to finish this journey, then I can worry about Brigit’s spies.

I hold up a hand., “We don’t need a history lesson, Brigit. I can’t order you to stay. However, if you come with us, you’ll be under my orders.”

“She can’t come,” Flavian immediately protests.

I open my mouth, but Darcy loudly creaks down the stairs, her auburn hair a tangled mess. Her eyes flit between the three of us, cheeks flushing., “Can’t you two stop arguing?”

Brigit barks a laugh, while Flavian just glowers. He shoves his arms together, feet tapping impatiently.

“We’re discussing things, not arguing.” I smile tightly, hoping the answer is enough. A knot of hair falls into Darcy’s eyes; I almost reach out to push the hair away from her face.

She shakes her head, blowing the hair from her face., “Well.,” She looks at me., “Is Brigit coming?”

“Of course, I am,” Brigit starts, stepping toward her brother, practically spitting in his face. His shoulders straighten as he turns deliberately away from her, grumbling, “You can’t come. You’ve lost your sense of sanity.”

“Brigit doesn’t live at Court.,” I ignore them, explaining the situation to Darcy, “She doesn’t have to obey Court orders if they don’t apply to the entire kingdom.”

“You don’t live at Court.” Darcy’s gaze jumps to Brigit, her eyes widening.
